Defensive handgun training

This course, developed by the Newberg Rifle & Pistol Club, is intended to provide training for owners or potential owners of handguns who are interested in learning more about reality of the legal use of firearms for defensive purposes in the state of Oregon and/or Utah.
The course stresses correct handling procedures for handguns, as well as general safety issues for home and concealed carry defensive use of firearms.

Successful completion of the course qualifies the participants to apply for an OREGON CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE and/or a UTAH CONCEALED FIREARM PERMIT. However, the primary intent of the course is to provide a basic set of skills and knowledge enabling each individual to make a decision about the use of firearms for defense. Even if you have no intention of continuing on to obtain a concealed handgun license, this course can provide valuable knowledge and experience to enable you to decide on defensive handgun use.

An important part of the course is the individually coached live-fire exercise. One thing that no-one should ever do is to get their first experience of defensive fire in a real life or death situation. Hitting a man size target, even at a range of a few feet, can be more difficult than it might appear (certainly more difficult that it would appear from watching TV !). Not only is it dangerous to depend upon a firearm if you are not certain of its, and your limitations, but actually firing and missing the target can have severe consequences for yourself, and innocent bystanders.

Classroom instruction is for four hours and is followed by a live fire exercise. If you own a handgun, you are encouraged to bring it along (unloaded!), with 50 rounds of factory ammunition to use in the live-fire exercise. Each personal firearm will be inspected (free of charge) to ensure that it is fully functional and in a safe condition.

The defensive handgun course is presented four times per year on the third Saturday of January, April, July and October. Attendance is limited to twenty (20) Students. The October 16 class is still open.
